THE EFFECT OF NUCLEATING AGENT (TiO2) ADDITION ON CRYSTALLIZATION BEHAVIOUR, MACHINABILITY OF POTASSIUM MICA AND FLOURAPATITE CONTAINING GLASS CERAMICS AND BIOACTIVITY CHARACTERIZATION

Machinable glass ceramics are produced by similar production methods like other glass ceramics with nucleation and controlled crystallization heat treatment. Machinable glass ceramics containing microscrystalline phases of mica and apatite can be considered as new materials for bone implants and substitutes in human body. The purpose of this study is to investigate the crystallization behaviour, mechanical properties and in-vitro bioactivity character of machinable glass ceramics having flourapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) to potassium mica (K2Mg3AlSi3O10F2) as a fuction of titania addition, as nucleating agent. For selected glass ceramic compositions, machinability is obtained by the precipitation of potassium mica in the base glass matrix. The results of the bioactivity characterization show that hydroxycarbonateapatite (HCA) layer formation on the surfaces are obtained for all glass-ceramic compositions.
